The Places In Between – Rory Stewart

I was given this book for Christmas. It’s not one I would probably have picked up in the shop and read. It’s a sort of travelogue, the journey of one man, on foot, across Afghanistan.

I never really got to understand just why this trip had to be made. OK so there had been an earlier walk which got interrupted and this was the missing section to complete that original walk. It doesn’t seem much of a reason to me.

Having said that the tale is interesting. He knows a lot about the history and culture of the region. It does open up a new Afghanistan to me.  He is close to death on several occasions, but manages to come through often by luck, but mostly through the humanitarianism of the people he met. It’s not a walk most of us could make, language skills are key, but he made it. I still feel he’d have been better off doing something else.

Would I read it again? No
